The space between, 2016
The space between is a series of images that explores the lesser known division of peripheral communities from Belfast's city centre. In these areas of North, East & West Belfast, a series of infrastructure projects (such as the Westlink & M3 Flyover) and poor development have created very stark barriers between these communities and their city centre. Streets that once led straight to the city now stop abruptly, with access provided in a convoluted manner, through exposed, caged pedestrian bridges or sporadic, lifeless road bridges. The communities feel hemmed in by these structures and wastelands that have been imposed upon them.
The series formed part of Belfast City Council’s ‘city as a gallery’ exhibition in 2016, with the images erected close to one of the interfaces on a tall metal fence for 6 months.
